Making changes in one’s community requires taking an active stand and tackling a specific problem that needs to be fixed. While the United States of America has strict labor laws on employee welfare, citizens and employees still have unpleasant experiences they would like to improve. Jeffrey Franklin is one of the citizens taking active steps to change things in his hometown, Amherst, in the state of NY.
He cites specific examples of what he has been through during his time working at the Town of Amherst Highway Department, during which he had an accident and was out of work due to the injuries he sustained. His injuries required surgery, and Jeffrey claimed that he received little to no support from the Town of Amherst Highway Department. “They refused to provide a wage verification form that would get me lost wages for almost six months. I was also laughed at by another supervisor when I asked for basic accommodation of an air-conditioned vehicle which was available,” he said. Jeff asked for an air-conditioned vehicle because his multiple sclerosis caused overheating, and they allegedly refused to accommodate him and his condition because of discrimination.
Jeffrey Franklin believes workplaces and employers should do better with their employees when they go through life-changing events, and rather than laugh at them or dismiss their concerns; they should support them and help them get back on their feet. It took Jeffrey going through such a challenging event in his life to realize that problems like that existed, and now, he’s pulling all the stops to ensure nobody else ever goes through such. “I was made to suffer mentally, financially, emotionally, and physically due to the stress they put me through,” he shared.
Jeff claims that other, less-strenuous jobs were available, but the administration refused to move him from one of the heaviest jobs in the plant. As an example, he was promised a driving position, which he was licensed for, but he was passed over for that because, as he was told, he was “too mentally ill” for the job.
Since he resigned from the department on February 18, 2022, Jeffrey has been a loud voice in shedding light on the corruption and dirty politics happening within the town, with the sole aim of exposing what allegedly goes on behind the scenes. He believes citizens should know about these issues and speak up before things get worse than they already are, like how some people are moved to positions of power just because they are related to the staff of the current administration even though there are long-time employees who are more qualified. Jeff also stated that younger, newer employees were handed easier jobs because of these family connections.
Jeff also claims that his employers canceled his health care because he couldn’t pay the premiums. He was also kept waiting for 6 months for a wage verification form for lost wages, and in those 6 months, the bills kept piling up until he was cut off from his much-needed health care. Because of this, he could not afford his MS treatments or to get his scripts filled.
Even though he already had the unpleasant experience he did and he’s working on getting some redress, Jeffrey Franklin has pledged his commitment to causes that improve his community and make the world a better place for everyone. “The town taxpayers and voters have so much of their resources not going to the right things. So much corruption has gone on for years, and it should not continue. I am just one out of many, and if things don’t get fixed, more people will experience the same or worse. So, the earlier we fix things, the better for everyone,” Jeffrey said.
