Hip Hop Artists, Community Activists And Elected Officials To Address Rising Gun Violence At Peace In The Streets Event

By: Issuewire

Los Angeles, California Mar 1, 2022 (Issuewire.com) - Hip Hop 4 Peace, in association with The Peace Alliance, the 11 Eleven Network, and Groundwurk Studios announced a live-stream community event, Hip Hop 4 Peace Town Hall: Peace In The Streets on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, at 3 PM PDT at Catch One in Los Angeles. This event will bring together the largest gathering of Hip Hop artists in recent years, community stakeholders, and elected officials who will address the recent uptick of gun violence in Hip Hop culture and call for peacebuilding measures. The live stream can be viewed on the VYRE Network, The 11 Eleven Network, V TV Network, HipHopTV.com, and SwaggMedia.com.

Although peace is the foundation of Hip Hop, the recent rise of gun violence has created an untenable environment inside and outside of the culture, impacting communities nationwide. With one rapper dead every 44 hours due to gun violence, the Hip Hop community can no longer be silent about the prevalence of guns on the streets and the resulting environment of violence and harm.

The date of March 9th is significant as it marks the 25th anniversary of the killing of Christopher "Biggie" Wallace in Los Angeles. And sadly, Hip Hop continues to struggle today with the senseless killings of young rappers. "We were very intentional in selecting March 9th as the day to bring artists, activists, officials, and peacebuilders together in the hopes of effectuating real change," stated Tina Marie Tyler, creator and executive producer of Hip Hop 4 Peace Town Hall: Peace In The Streets. "We must support Rep. Barbara Lee's bill HR: 1111 which elevates peacebuilding to the executive branch of government and will provide financial resources directly to communities."

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) noted the racial disparity in gun violence and called for an end to the violence. "While gun violence impacts all Americans, communities of color are especially devastated by our nation's lax gun laws. African Americans specifically are two times more likely to be killed by gun violence, and African American children are 10 times more likely to die from gun violence than other children in America. This madness must end."

Hip Hop 4 Peace Town Hall: Peace In The Streets boasts a varied group of community Peace Partners who all share a passion for community and peace. "It is typically women who lead movements. In this perfect storm of Covid-19, social reckoning, increased access to guns, and exposure to all forms of violence, it is necessary to amplify a blueprint for peace. Our call to action is for Hip Hop to pull through in 2022 and reach the goal of 1,111,000 signatures advocating for H.R. 1111, The U.S. Department of Peacebuilding Act. Hip Hop will continue to use our powerful influence for peace," stated JoHanna "J" Thompson, MPA of The Peace Alliance.
