“Lectures on Communicative Rationality” Published in the Journal “Dublin News.”

USA - 14 August, 2023 - U.S. Scholar, Dr. Jonathan Kenigson, is excited to announce the publication of the “Lectures on Communicative Rationality” series in the Irish journal “Dublin News.” The series began in June 2023 and concluded in August. It continues to attract widespread interest and public attention in the USA, Canada, the UK, and Ireland.

The purpose of the “Lectures” is to explore themes of subjectivity, cultural relativism, and the possibility of rational communication in postmodern, multicultural societies. The series was composed in Sofia, Bulgaria in response to public debates among Socialist, Muslim, and Christian scholars and policy-makers. The series integrates perspectives from Habermas, Levinas, Gadamer, Kant, and the existentialists to argue for a robust theory of communicative rationality based upon an ethical obligation engendered by the greeting and welcoming of strangers. The themes explored are of great importance in contemporary European culture.

“Lectures on Communicative Rationality” appears in Dublin News in light of Brexit, NATO accession requests, and geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe. How can people who share different notions of reason communicate effectively in democratic societies? Is it even possible or ethical to ask others to communicate rationally? Are we ourselves aware of what rational discussion commits us to do? This three-part series draws on Habermas, Kant, and the existentialists to explore such questions in a new interdisciplinary perspective.

The series is composed by a mathematician who explored such themes for the Bulgarian government. Despite critical acclaim from Bulgarian philosophers, it is not a traditional treatise in academic philosophy. “Lectures on Communicative Rationality” is an “outside” perspective composed by an academician with training in formal logic. The work has been variously described as a revival of Buber’s mystical “I-Thou” encounter; Levinas’ discussion of the inviolable ethical claims of the stranger; a defense of functional rationality in affairs of statecraft; and a discourse on epistemological obligations of political philosophers themselves.

Access is available free of charge and without subscription to anyone with an internet connection. In keeping with Kenigson’s philosophy of “Reasoned Philanthropy,” materials published in “Lectures on Communicative Rationality” can be used for any educational purpose but may not be monetized for any purpose other than those expressly permitted by “Dublin News” or its parent companies.
