IBC 2024: MC-IF Member Ericsson Showcases VVC Integration for Cloud Gaming and Mobile Device and Service Providers

By: PRLog

AMSTERDAM - Sept. 14, 2024 - PRLog -- IBC 2024 – Ericsson, a Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF) member organization, is set to demonstrate the integration of Versatile Video Coding (VVC) with Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC), marking the world's first real-time, low-latency video streaming application of this cutting-edge codec during IBC 2024. Ericsson will exhibit VVC's enhancement of cloud gaming experiences by streaming a remotely rendered game to a web application running in a browser and to a native app on a mobile device.

MC-IF members' demonstrations will be located at Hall 3, B.21 where conference attendees can see VVC's capabilities in supporting a broad spectrum of devices including the latest smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Experts with Ericsson will be on hand illustrating how VVC delivers high-quality video with minimal delay and enhanced performance.

"The continued growth of gaming on mobile and other devices creates new requirements for device manufacturers and network service providers exploring the latest technologies that support optimized end-user experiences whether on the latest games or long-standing favorites," states Lukasz Litwic, Research Leader at Ericsson and Chair of the Interoperability Working Group at MC-IF.

As an emerging video coding technology, VVC's enhanced flexibility and greater compression efficiency are benefits that the media and entertainment technology ecosystem are beginning to consider.

"Latency is the enemy in environments with rich computer-generated imagery such as cloud gaming. As a result, compression is a critical element that must be addressed in video applications and services," said Litwic. "We are demonstrating how VVC performs on both old and new devices in these popular gaming scenarios, where the demand for higher bitrates and more responsive gameplay are at a premium."

After a number of standards bodies approved VVC in 2023, this exploration of the codec's ability to make high-performance games accessible on mobile devices and tablets represents an important moment for the industry, generating greater interest and understanding of the implementation of VVC.

"The integration of VVC and WebRTC supports real-time, interactive applications with greater compression efficiencies that reduce bandwidth requirements, enabling experiences previously available only on consoles or PCs accessible on smartphones and tablets. VVC decoding also introduces better energy efficiency, which is fundamental to battery life and performance on mobile devices. Consumers can enjoy reduced buffering, faster access to content, improved video quality and enhanced game interactivity–all of which facilitate higher-quality experiences," said Litwic.

Built upon the generations that have come before, VVC has been developed to ensure compatibility across devices and existing ecosystems supported by cloud gaming platforms, mobile device manufacturers and network service providers.

"Our demonstration emphasizes VVC's ability to integrate seamlessly with other technologies like WebRTC, proving its readiness for applications. This interoperability opens the door to broadening opportunities in cloud gaming opportunities and more immersive user experiences on a range of devices," concluded Litwic.
