17 African Countries Celebrated Mandela Day Through Human Rights Activities

To celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday and to make a difference in their countries, human rights activists from South Africa and 16 other African countries hit the streets to get human rights known in their communities.

Midrand, Gauteng, South Africa - August 3, 2023

To celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday and to make a difference in their countries, human rights activists from South Africa and 16 other African countries hit the streets to get human rights known in their communities. Following Madiba’s teachings, they went to schools and in their neighborhoods to get people to know there are rights and how those are for the protection of all.

Forming into groups, they used Mandela’s Birthday to take actions. People from South Africa, Togo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Angola, Kenya, Niger, Chad, Gambia, Ghana, Zambia, Mauritius, Mauritania, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Rwanda and Benin went all around to spread peaceful messages about human rights to honor his Birthday.

Giving 700 hours of volunteer work in the first weeks of July, the teams are proud of what they have done.

Nelson Mandela is an international icon. His work represents Ubuntu. The impact he had in the lives of hundreds of millions is magnificent. This is why it is easy to get people active across Africa,” said Asthra Maximov, the Director of the Social Reform activities for the Church of Scientology in the whole of Africa. “And they participate with pleasure to honor the Man and to show him the respect he deserved,” does she add.

Over 12,000 people were lectured about human rights. But with media, over 32,000,000 were reached and heard of the human rights message.

The campaign, originally called United For Human Rights was established 25 years ago to make people aware of their rights. Having surveyed people across the world, shockingly, it was found out that very few are aware of their rights. Many can’t even name five of their rights, nor define what human rights mean.

“It can make a huge difference for individuals to know their rights. He can demand it be respected. Even kids who are being bullied can tell the grown-ups to go away and respect their rights,” said Maximov. “A school in Taiwan where the teachers regularly taught human rights, saw the bullying drop to almost nothing. It can make a big difference here too,” Maximov concluded.

She praises Madiba for showing a better way. She adds that the Founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, has also been a source of inspiration for her on the protection of human rights.
