The owners of the hotel invite one and all to come and make the most of their facilities while experiencing an integral piece of American history in this uniquely restored building.

Historic Hotels of America is a program that recognizes and celebrates over 300 establishments around the U.S. Their list includes castles, chateaus, palaces, academies, haciendas, villas, monasteries, and other hotels built over the last 1,000 years. The latest award is a testament to the Historic Blue Moon Hotel’s dedication to the preservation of the building and the celebration of its cultural and historical significance.

The hotel, located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, was built by Julius Boekel, the architect for the city’s First German Baptist Church. It was originally a tenement building for immigrants and served as housing until 1936 until the owner merchants decided to tin up the apartment windows. It was purchased by artist and entrepreneur Randy Settenbrino in 1997 and in 20001-2006 transformed in a five-year art preservation and design project into a stately hotel.

Settenbrino converted the building into a hotel with the intention of preserving its history while adding a modern twist. As part of this renovation, he salvaged its original artifacts and built them into the hotel’s modern interior, repurposing and upcycling fixtures, mosaics, and ironwork.

Settenbrino is a talented and captivating artist who works primarily in oil. His passionate and painterly artwork adds to much to the décor, He also added photographs by famed photographer Rebecca Lepkoff. Settenbrino’s mural inspired by Van Gogh on the ceiling of the elevator, is a must see. The walls of the elevator cab are covered in ornate tin panels taken from the back of the original staircase, which were repainted by his daughter Ida, a budding artist apprenticed during the pandemic restoration in 2020-2021.

The Historic Blue Moon Hotel guestrooms have soaring ceilings and balconies, some with commanding views of the city; all rooms are large by NYC standards, some double, queens, king- and XL King sized apartments available to choose from. All are fitted with large screen TVs, high tech kitchenettes, and are equipped with a hairdryer, iron, and ironing board. Free WiFi is offered throughout the hotel.

The hotel is situated in the heart of the city’s Lower East Side, on what is known as the 57th and 5th Orchard and Delancey. The Hotel is within walking distance to SOHO, South Street Sea Port, East and Greenwich Village, as well as NYC’s oldest and most beautiful bridges Brooklyn, Manhattan and Williamsburg. The staff prides itself on the hotel’s blend of history with New York’s vibrant culture.

– Sandra Ramani, New York Magazine said of the hotel “A refreshing change from the shiny high-rises popping up downtown, the Blue Moon sits in an 1879 tenement that’s been painstakingly restored to reflect its origins.”
