Plan Manage Assist (PMA) Founding Partner, John Collins, has firsthand experience of raising a child with a disability. As a result, he has built a business that is passionate about helping parents alike understand that children with a disability are just like everyone else. His daughter Emily, is non-verbal and has a dual disability of Down Syndrome and Autism.
When he thinks of Emily, he thinks about her like every other parent.
"I don't see someone with a disability, I see a pretty young girl who will share many of the same feelings, hopes, interests, and dreams that other girls have. She will also face the same challenges with friends, school, socially and at work," John said.
For Emily, communication has always been a challenge. To help communicate with Emily, he takes a multidisciplinary communication approach. Such as sign language, gestures, Picture Exchange (PECS), some basic words, and now an App called Proloquo to Go.
John said, "to any other parent or carer, I would say never give up, just because one approach doesn't work never hesitate to try something else as you never know what might work."
From John's experience in raising a child with a disability, he believes that successes come not only from his own knowledge of his daughter Emily, but that he and his wife partnered with numerous speech therapists, occupational therapists, exercise physiologists, and many
carers. He believes that everyone needs to be on the same page including schools and support providers to help children with a disability be the best person they can be.
"From our perspective, it's worth investing time to find the right school and support for any child, and you only get out what you put in. Many of the schools and carers become like extended families, the teachers can be amazing, and you will meet lifelong friends," said John.
STRUGGLES AND DEMANDS ARE HAVING A CHILD WITH A DISABILITY
Having a child with a disability can impact relationships and life is filled with challenges. However, John Collins expressed that the successes that they've had are what makes his daughter Emily special.
"We can see how hard she tries with everything, and how frustrated she is when she can't communicate what she wants from time to time. Emily is a young woman with feelings and emotions she wants to share, so being frustrated occasionally is understandable," said John.
