Make Fabrics Invincible with Hemp: HemHemp designs fabrics that are superior to the rest

Make Fabrics Invincible with Hemp: HemHemp designs fabrics that are superior to the rest

The environment has been through drastic changes over the years; thanks to the global human footprint we leave every year. High sea levels, scarcity of water and the extinction of various species is a clear evidence of the consequences of our actions. In the last decade, almost every industry, whether new or old, has seen a surge in the production and usage of man-made resources that might not be so good for the planet. The good news, however, is that an awareness has slowly been blossoming amongst industries. In the textile industry, geotextile manufacturers use their research to provide eco-solutions to the industry, and one such manufacturer not only wants to strengthen the environment but also your fabrics.

HemHemp is a weaving textile mill located in North Carolina, USA, which has been engaged in weaving and knitting for the last five months. Although new in the market, their product portfolio is already quite impressive. They manufacture hemp and/or silver medical surgical compression bandages, boxing hand wraps, athletic tape, and 100% hemp fabrics. An innovative hemp webbing manufacturer, HemHemp is the only hemp narrow weaving mill in the entire United States of America. They provide inventive hemp webbing solutions to fabrics for brands; be it for industrial strapping, hemp belts or military bandages. Being the first ever mill in the USA to weave and knit hemp, the founders, Madison Sexton, and Joe Shepley discovered the vast potentials that could be unlocked with using natural fibres.

The use of hemp and other natural fibres has been of particular interest for the last two decades. This is due to the knowledge that has been gained about their superior properties and strengths. Hemp has beneficial mechanical properties such as its tensile strength, as well as great resistance to biodegradation as well. With a strong background in research and development of the natural narrow fabric and geotextiles industry, HemHemp provides users the highest level of quality with their fabrics and hemp. An important reason for this is their foundational belief of providing fabrics that are natural so that no pesticide is seeped into the skin while wearing the fabric. Cotton, for example, accounts for a whopping 25% of global use of pesticides. Being an actively-used fibre, the consequences of its usage is becoming hazardous for the environment. The Amazon is being chopped away at a rapid speed in order to grow cotton for medical bandages, clothes, athletic gear and more. HemHemp provides one of the cleanest of product lines that are without any chemical coatings in the world.

Take for example their superior antibacterial surgical bandages. The manufacturing process for such products involves high levels of coating to achieve appropriate antibacterial percentages. These coatings are in no way natural and the weaved fabrics are soaked in them for long periods of time. The chemicals present in these coatings have harmful effects on the skin in the long run. However, the narrow fabric manufacturer does not make use of these coatings at all and still achieves a satisfying percentage of antibacterial properties for the surgical bandages, becoming a crucial product for hospitals and clinics when performing amputation-based operations. HemHemp manages to achieve such a feat by carefully researching and testing the fibre to bring a result of high quality and excellence in their fibres. This advanced textile construction involves the mechanical engineering of two elements: hemp and silver. Both are extremely well-known for their mechanical properties, biodegradation resistance, and ecological benefits. Undergoing various tests, the simple incorporation of 5% of silver, along with the best hemp available in their bandages, HemHemp has successfully proved that the inventive combination of these two elements is capable of bringing a profound reduction in microbes such as Aspergillus Niger, Duck Hepatitis B Virus, Escherichia Coli and many more in their bandages, which is quite commendable. This way, the US-based manufacturer has made the possibility of an all-natural, chemical-coatings free, antibacterial bandage an exciting reality.

This well-established system of expertise is not just limited to compressed surgical bandages, but ventures even further to athletic wear that benefits immensely from such dedicated products. HemHemp has recently produced an ecologically advanced athletic jersey that is completely natural; having no coatings, chemicals or urea resins. The natural jersey knit is entirely composed of tercel and hemp, which provides great antimicrobial properties along with high resistance to staph and e-coli naturally. With all these well-researched, natural fibre-based geotextile fabrics incorporated, the jersey is almost five times more absorbent and stronger than cotton and other commonly used fabrics.

Geotextiles have not always been this environmental-friendly. The industry incorporated the use of plastics before, which became a major concern as they are not very biodegradable by the end of their product life. This raised questions about the negative impact it would have on the environment. The solution to this was the designing and usage of natural fibre-based products instead. Natural fibres such as hemp and flax are highly resourceful, where even their by-products can be used in the process of manufacturing. For example, they are considered extremely renewable resources that could be used in the near future to manufacture geotextiles industrially. While flax and nettle fibres stand higher than hemp when it comes to strength and other properties, nothing can beat the natural fibre in its supreme antibacterial properties. It has a naturally reduced sensitivity to micro-organism attacks and much lighter weight.

With research, changes can gradually be implemented. It is with natural resources that we could produce man-made chemicals and resources that greatly benefited various industries in terms of time and capital. While they continue to benefit many businesses even now, a hazardous consequence against the environment is not something we can afford any longer. It is with sensitive and research dedicated companies like HemHemp that adequate changes can be introduced to not only save the environment but also provide advanced solutions to problems faced in the textile world.
