All my life, I was troubled by debilitating and mysterious symptoms. Doctors dismissed my complaints, thinking that I was just trying to get attention as a child. I struggled through each and every day, tripping and falling constantly. It became much more acute after I retired and I began to pray for death. My life had become too much of a struggle. My book is the story of my day-to-day trials and my eventual triumph over my condition at the age of 58.

While most people think that physical challenges hinder a person in living her best life, author Jeanne G. DeBold shares a gripping story about how hydrocephalus changed her life. In her book entitled Wacky, Wet, and Wobbly: A Journey Through A Lifetime of Undiagnosed Hydrocephalus (Water on the Brain), the author’s express purpose is that of helping people who either are or might be suffering from the effects of water on the brain, better known as hydrocephalus.

All her life, the author was troubled by debilitating symptoms that she could not explain. After seeking medical attention, the doctors simply dismissed her complaints, stating that she was just trying to get attention as a child.  She struggled through each and every day of her life, thinking that if she were a stronger person, she could overcome her difficulties. After retirement, her symptoms became acute and she began to see death as her only outlet. Her daily struggles were so unbelievably crippling that it inspired her to write a piece that would encourage other people to move forward despite difficult times.

Wacky, Wet, and Wobbly: A Journey Through A Lifetime of Undiagnosed Hydrocephalus (Water on the Brain) is a story of an unfortunate life event so inevitably compelling, every reader would be inspired to continue living their life despite difficult times. Moreover, the author is an epitome of a person saved by her faith in God who has been her one and only refuge during the times of despair, when no one else was there to listen and believe in her. The author should be greatly commended for her continuing efforts to help others identify and address this misunderstood, but fixable, medical condition. The author’s noble goal here is summed up in the post-script: “If just ONE person is helped by my story, then my years of suffering will not have been in vain.” Her literary piece is definitely a must-read!
