On Thursday, May 23, CCVO (Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations) will convene a speaker series Nonprofits at Noon. CCVO's President & CEO David Mitchell will speak with Roger Chaffin, former Calgary Police Chief, in a candid conversation about the lessons learned from harassment issues during his tenure at the Calgary Police Service. Chaffin is expected to provide insights into what worked and what didn't to address the complex cultural issues preventing healthy workplaces in the #metoo era that has too often simplified these issues. Chaffin will be joined by Pam Krause, President & CEO of the Centre for Sexuality, who is working to identify and deal with this distressing, and often embedded, cultural issue in nonprofit workplaces.

"Nonprofit organizations are not immune to cultures of harassment and bullying that damage their ability to be effective in doing the good work that make our communities better" says David Mitchell, President & CEO at CCVO. "It's time to change the narrative about what needs to happen to build cultures of respect and put a stop to workplace harassment".

The Alberta nonprofit sector is a source of innovation, solutions for complex problems, and creative collaborations. None of these activities occur without a committed, professional, and skilled workforce. It is vital to support and recognize the nonprofit workforce in all the contributions it makes both to the quality of life for each and every Albertan and to the economic strength of the province.

"There is a significant lack of understanding of how our behaviour at work affects our colleagues. Nonprofit professionals, like all professionals, need to develop the skills and tools to identify inappropriate behaviour in themselves and others" says Mitchell.

The Nonprofits at Noon events bring together cross-sector leaders in conversation about important issues in our community.
