By: PRLog
HOUSTON - May 21, 2019 - PRLog -- Kenya's First Lady, the Honorable Margaret Kenyatta will be Chief and Keynote Speaker for the 2nd annual "Building Capacity for Nursing and Midwifery Leadership in Africa" Conference on June 13-14, 2019 at St. Paul's University in Limuru, Kenya.  Medical Benevolence Foundation (MBF)'s Mary K Center for Global Nursing Development is sponsoring the conference, together with local Kenyan organizations, to help transform healthcare delivery through nursing leadership.

Other speakers include healthcare experts and practitioners from Africa and the U.S., including Dr. Mary Nandili, Director of Nursing Services, Kenya Ministry of Health. Lisa Cole, Director of the Mary K Center will represent MBF at the conference.

The purpose of the conference is to help empower nurses and midwives to play a leading role in tackling the major healthcare challenges facing their country.

Three different learning tracks offered will allow attendees to do just that:
  • Track 1:  Nursing and Midwifery Leadership Principles
  • Track 2:  Nursing and Midwifery Practice and Health Service Delivery
  • Track 3:  Integrating Research into Clinical Practice: The Role of Nurses

"The timing of this conference is critical for the nursing workforce in Kenya," states Dr. Nandili. "Our nurses face complex and demanding challenges every day.

"To help create change that will last, our workforce must feel empowered," she continued. "They must become leaders of change that not only improve those work conditions, but more importantly, improve the care delivered to our patients."

Planning began in July 2018, led by nursing leaders in Kenya.  They include:
  • Ministry of Health of Kenya, Nursing Directorate
  • St. Paul's University
  • National Nurses Association of Kenya
  • Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK)

"This collaboration demonstrates the significance of nurses and midwives," explains Andy Mayo, MBF's CEO.  "Nursing is going to be one of the foundational elements to redefining and transforming healthcare delivery from what is it now.  Excellence in healthcare simply will not exist without visionary and engaged nursing leaders.

"To achieve great change, he adds, "we are working together to change the current conventional wisdom, change the current approach on nursing.  This conference is an important step in that direction."
