Alexandra Perry, Clinical Director for Addiction Rehab Toronto, Speaks as a Guest on 640 Toronto

Jeff McArthur at 640 Toronto asked Alexandra Perry, Clinical Director for Addiction Rehab Toronto, to speak as a guest on the air about what sober houses do for those struggling with addiction.

Wendy Williams, a well-known Talk Show Host at the Wendy Williams Show, recently revealed that she’s been living in a sober house. She got very candid and personal on her show as she opened up to the audience about her struggles with addiction. The revelation sparked quite a bit of interest, particularly on social media. Jeff McArthur at 640 Toronto asked Alexandra Perry, Clinical Director for Addiction Rehab Toronto, to speak as a guest on the air about what sober houses do for those struggling with addiction.

Wendy Williams, in her quest to open up, explained her story, “For some time now, and even today and beyond, I have been living in a sober house. When you see me come to work glammed up, right after the show, I go across the street to do my Pilates. After I go to Pilates, I go to several meetings and I see my brothers and sisters caught up in their addictions and looking for help. They don’t care that I’m Wendy Williams. There’s no autographs. There’s brothers and sisters caught up in the struggle.”

Jeff McArthur at 640 Toronto wanted to find out more about sober houses and how they impact those struggling with addiction. He asked Alexandra Perry, Clinical Director for Addiction Rehab Toronto, to explain the concept of a sober house. She explained, “A sober house is essentially a residential facility that allows men and women who struggle with substance abuse to stay sober.”

She continued, “It allows them to be accountable. A lot of times, there’s programs, counselling, curfews – some restrictions to help people stay safe and get them back into healthy routines. In sober living houses, you’re with other people. That peer support is really beneficial. You’re with people who understand and have gone through similar experiences."

Addiction Rehab Toronto specializes in providing residential substance abuse and addiction treatment. They offer 30, 60 or 90-day inpatient addiction treatment programs, as well as an extended aftercare program wherein patients can move onto living in a sober house.

During the interview, Jeff asked Alexandra’s opinion on how celebrities speaking out impacts others who are struggling. Alexandra expressed, “I think it’s amazing and it shows that addiction doesn’t discriminate against anyone. It’s not one person who looks a particular way. It’s great for someone like her to normalize the experience.”

When it comes to addiction, it’s vital as a community to be aware and educated – supporting one another. It’s a human experience and it needs to be talked about openly. Wendy’s experience is an eye-opener and anyone who is struggling is encouraged to reach out to any treatment center and take that first step towards recovery.
