Central High senior talks about setting up multiple businesses and a digital marketing team with another friend

Ben Morone is a high school senior who now runs multiple LLCs in different sectors including snacks and beverage service, e-commerce store, a landscaping company and his latest launch, a digital marketing company named Ivory Hills. His passion for entrepreneurship began at an even young age when he had the first tryst of dealing with customers and managing finances while selling lemonades in the front yard of his house.

He found his latest venture with his friend Michael Horrel, a local expert in Facebook Ad targeting, who started his journey into the business world with his partner Ben by selling soda and snacks. Michael created an e-commerce store that sells products in five different countries. At present, both Ben and Michael are dedicated to providing state of the art digital marketing services to their clients. While Ben has a deep understanding of the ever-changing social media algorithm, Michael is an expert in Ad targeting.

We got in touch with Ben Morone who talks about his entrepreneurial journey and plans for the future.

Interviewer: Give us a brief about your background?

Ben Morone: I'm originally from Indianapolis, but I moved to Billings Montana at a young age. I played hockey and soccer growing up and always had an interest in building things. I'd get Legos for Christmas and run to my room only to return several hours later with the sets complete. I always knew I was gonna build something, I just didn't know what.

Interviewer: What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

Ben Morone: Freedom. Any entrepreneurs reading this may laugh, but when I entered high school I entrepreneurship as a way to escape the normal work-life balance. I didn't enjoy sitting in school doing busy work and learning math equations that I wasn't going to use. I have always had a love of learning interesting things and I loved how entrepreneurs turned their knowledge into something applicable and beneficial for the community. Entrepreneurship and self-growth go hand in hand and once I started reading about famous businessmen I was hooked.

Interviewer: How did you begin your first business venture?

Ben Morone: My sophomore year of high school Michael and I were pretty bored in school and realizing we had two more years until college we decided we needed to do something. The gas station a block away sold cans of soda for $1 and we thought this was "overpriced." We went to the dollar store and took $4 and bought 16 cans of soda. The next day we sold them all before lunch. Realizing we were onto something we bought more flavors and expanded our inventory to brownies and fruit snacks. We started making money in the hallways and during class. There was a certain rush to it haha.

Interviewer: Tell us something about your latest project Ivory Hills?

Ben Morone: Ivory Hills wasn't originally something we thought long and hard about. It kind of just fell into existence. After we were involved in e-commerce we learned how to run Facebook ads and grow Instagram accounts. I've always thought that the money in business is in service-based businesses not manufacturing. After e-commerce, Michael and I sat down for a conversation. I remember we went through and listed out our skills and tried to decide if they were marketable. With a few online searches, we saw other teens and young people making up to six figures from their phones. From that conversation, Ivory Hills was born. In short, it's a lean digital marketing agency that can help companies boost and maintain their image online.

Interviewer: How do you help your clients with your services?

Ben Morone: Back in 2000-2014 the thing all businesses needed to have was a good website. Small and large companies spent thousands of dollars on having websites made for them. Nowadays a simple website is not enough. With the explosion of social media, the word of mouth is 10x more powerful now. If someone receives bad service in your restaurant they could easily hop online and film themselves complaining about your restaurant. This could be devastating for your brand. On the other hand, social media can do wonders for your brand. A simple ad on Facebook can reach thousands of people for only $5 a day. The days of spending $600 for a half page ad in a poorly circulated local magazine are wanting. We help companies run these ads and get in front of consumers who want and are interested in their products.

Interviewer: Tell us something about your partnership with Michael Horrell? What roles you have in the business?

Ben Morone: Michael has been my friend since 3rd grade. We have been through a lot together: switching schools two times and even physically fighting each other. Michael has a very analytical and intelligent way about him. He's extremely good with math and that's part of the reason he deals with our venture's finances. His analytical side has really taken to the Facebook ads side of our business. I run more of the sales and client acquisition side of our business.
