iPhones Are Destroying The Planet, Let’s Reverse The Trend

Researches from American Technology Distribution, Inc. have found that by 2040 iPhones will account for about 10% of the world's carbon footprint – and I'm sorry folks, but that's a huge amount of carbon.

Part of the problem is that there are so many iPhones and we are always getting new ones each year. The shelf life of an iPhone is about 1 year (or if you are clumsy like me, more like 2 months, am I right?) which makes iPhones basically disposable phones.

Now what do you think has happened to the over 1 billion iPhones sold since 2007? Well, since less than 1% of iPhones are currently recycled they will eventually end up in a landfill. I mean, maybe it sits in your junk drawer for a year or so, but unless you sell it to someone else it will inevitably go to a landfill.

iPhones in landfills release toxic chemicals into the soil, and even for the iPhone to be made there must be minerals mined - as an example, a surprising amount of gold goes into making an iPhone.

This means that by you hanging onto your iPhone longer brings down your personal carbon footprint, simply because the stuff in an iPhone that you already own doesn't need to be mined again. iPhone's are also getting bigger. The larger screen models that are popular these days are literally guzzling carbon.

Each click you make on your iPhone has to be computed somewhere. Each Facebook refresh needs a server, each Google search has a bank of physical servers to make that happen.

Servers and data centers consume an insane amount of energy, and it's only going to get worse - the study found that by 2040 they will account for 45% of the whole IT energy consumption.

More iPhones, require more servers - they're working as a team, people.

What can we do to help? Well, according to Stephen Smith, CFO at AppleLiquidator.com: “Keeping your iPhone longer is the best way to help. Or repurpose it with us, we will refurbish and re-commerce it back to someone who needs it. If less than 1% of iPhones are being recycled then I think that's pretty shameful given you can actually send it to us for a decent amount of cash”
