Three Reasons to Get Children Involved in Music This Summer

NYJW is launching a Summer Jazz Day Camp for pre-teens and teens in July and August in New York City

NEW YORK - February 20, 2019 - (Newswire.com)
  • Lessons of patience, creativity and cultural awareness are all pillars of music education; the skills children will pick up by studying music go far beyond the notes on the page.

  • Recent studies show that children who learn music earn better grades and excel in other school subjects like language, writing and math when compared to children who don't play music.

  • Music encourages teamwork and friendship. Within an ensemble or class, children learn new methods of interacting and engaging with their peers in order to reach a common goal - and have FUN while doing it.

Jazz music, in particular, combines the rigors of classical music with individual improvisation; the skills acquired by playing jazz are transferable to any kind of music. Kids and teens can see for themselves at the New York Jazz Workshop, one of New York City's premier jazz music institutions.

NYJW is launching a Summer Jazz Day Camp for kids and teens in July and August as well as two exciting Weekly Music Workshops throughout the 2019 school year. Instrumentalists and vocalists aged 9-16 will get the chance to perform and learn about jazz in an environment that is friendly, informative and FUN.

Classes are led by a group of talented and dedicated educators — each of them talented jazz musicians in their own right with plenty of years of experience teaching music to kids and teens. NYJW is a member of the American Camp Association and all materials are in tune with admission requirements as stated by LaGuardia Community College, the Frank Sinatra High School, Aaron Copland School of Music /Queens College and similar programs.

Jazz Day Camp (July and August)

Summertime and the livin' is easy. Each session of the Jazz Day Camp for pre-teens (ages 9-12) and the Jazz Day Camp for teens (ages 13-16) is a five-day block during the months of July and August. Camp meets 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. (with an optional supervised "jam session" from 4-5 p.m. for late pick-up) Monday through Friday. Each week will have a different experienced principal teacher as well as masterclass guests — therefore, every week will be a brand new experience, culminating with group performances on Fridays. This is a perfect environment for young instrumentalists and vocalists to gain experience with jazz improvisation, ensemble playing, improvisation, composition and more. The pre-teen and teen camps accept a maximum of 10 students per week, so early registration is encouraged.

Price: $749 per week
eight percent discount on additional weeks
