Idaho Ed News published an article recently reporting the poverty rates in correlation to graduation rates in Idaho and across the nation. While this is an overall issue of concern that State Board, local officials and educators are working together to improve, Payette schools were recognized for our realistic and effective approach to enhancing our students opportunities for success in college or certificate programs.
As stated by Kevin Richert in the Idaho Ed News Article, “Idaho wants 60 percent of its 25- to 34-year-olds to complete some education beyond high school. This isn’t only a college graduation goal, although two- and four-year degrees count toward the bottom line. One-year professional certificates also count.” Payette School District is striving hard toward making that a reality for all of their students.
Our Vice Principal at Payette High School, Marci Holcomb, was interviewed and recognized for embracing our school district’s understanding that college may not be an option financially for many of our students. The district is emphasizing preparing students for career-technical education as an alternative to college or a path toward post secondary education. Holcomb is helping students with that effort.

In a follow up article, Idaho Ed News again highlights Payette Schools and our students by praising our certificate and intern programs offered. The article mentions how career-technical education has emerged as a complement and a counterweight to postsecondary education. It provides students with skill based knowledge to enter the work force with applicable skills needed for meaningful jobs and careers. Idaho Ed News also states that, “For the college-bound, CTE gives students a way to pay for tuition and housing. For students who won’t attend college, CTE promises mobile and tangible job training, at a bargain price.”
