LAKESIDE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT ATTRACTS FAMILIES AROUND SAN DIEGO COUNTY TO AWARD-WINNING LANGUAGE PROGRAMS

Families from all over San Diego County are choosing to drive their students to one of Lakeside Union School District’s (LUSD) prestigious language programs — but why? Lakeside’s language programs have grown in popularity because of their uniqueness to other language immersion programs. Unlike most language immersion programs in San Diego County, LUSD students have the option to learn three languages if they choose, Mandarin, Spanish, and of course, English. Another unique aspect of some of the programs at Lakeside is the one-way immersion, where ALL the students are English speaking and are taught by a native Mandarin or Spanish teacher.

LUSD’s full and partial language immersion programs were modeled after the pioneering program implemented in Canada in the 1960s for French immersion and are designed for native-English-speaking students to be taught all of their academic subjects in a second language. Because every student is an English-speaker already, all students are able to progress together as they learn their second language from a perfect Native language speaker.

Schools offerings full or partial language immersion are Riverview International Academy, Lakeview Elementary, and both Lakeside and Tierra del Sol Middle Schools. Lemon Crest Spanish two-way immersion program is designed to serve both English and non-English speakers, where both the native and non-native English speakers will become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural in Spanish and English. The schools offering these programs at LUSD see students becoming proficient in their second language while also developing cultural awareness.

A curriculum infused with language and cultural acquisition not only boosts academic achievement, but it also prepares students for the global society they will enter as adults. Being bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural will give Lakeside students more opportunities, especially as they mature and become a positive and contributing member of society. The skills and experiences students receive when enrolled in one of Lakeside Union School District’s language programs will benefit each child throughout their lives.
