It’s the great American gift idea shortage! In a survey conducted by BJ’s Wholesale Club (NYSE: BJ) and Wakefield Research, BJ’s found that most Americans (73 percent) are running out of gift ideas for someone on their list. The survey also found 68 percent of Americans have forgotten a gift for someone on the day of a holiday; and while 83 percent of those folks have managed to scrape together a gift, 11 percent chose to avoid the person altogether.

When it comes to holiday gifting, the survey also found some surprising data:

• Spoiling Rudolph: 15 percent of Americans will spend more money on gifts for their pet than their partner.
• Don’t Forget to Save for that Christmas Vacation: Less than a third of Americans (30 percent) expect to stay on budget.
• The Wrong Kind of Gift Swap: One in five Americans (20 percent) have given someone a gift that was intended for another person.
• Don’t Be A Gift Repeater: One in five Americans (20 percent) have repeated a gift that they had already gifted someone in the past.
