GDP expands, markets open higher

The markets opened higher with the Dow adding 19 points to 23,419 as the nation's economy expanded by a robust 3.0% in the third quarter. Nasdaq fell 21 points to 6,535.


On the upside


First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) reported higher third quarter earnings and revenue that beat analyst expectations prompting an upgrade.


Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) impressed with sharply higher third quarter earnings and revenue that topped estimates.


Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) reported higher first quarter earning and revenue that surpassed expectations.

On the downside


Expedia (Nasdaq: EXPE) disappointed with third quarter earnings and revenue that missed expectations.


Mattel (Nasdaq: MAT) blamed the bankruptcy of Toys R Us for falling to a loss for the third quarter.


Third quarter earnings and revenue for Cerner (Nasdaq: CERN) missed expectations.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 9 to 8 on the NYSE while advancers barely edged out decliners by a slim margin on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 gained 10 points to 2,570. Bitcoin plunged $126 to $5,703.
