Flat open ahead of earnings

The markets opened flat with the Dow slipping 3 points to 22,827 as investors digested earnings news. Nasdaq eased a point to 6,586.


On the upside


Kroger (NYSE: KR) will explore strategic alternatives for its convenience store business including a possible sale.


Pretium Resources (NYSE: PVG) reported that it produced 82,203 ounces of gold at its Brucejack Mine in the third quarter.


A preliminary review by the Food and Drug Administration determined that Aerie Pharmaceuticals' (Nasdaq: AERI) Rhopressa lowered eye pressure.

On the downside


Wells Fargo resumed coverage of Dick's Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS) with a Market Perform rating.


Fastenal (Nasdaq: FAST) reported higher third quarter earnings and revenue but investors were disappointed that the results failed to beat expectations.

Bank of America/Merrill Lynch downgraded Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) from a Buy rating to a Neutral rating.


In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 9 to 8 on the NYSE while advancers barely edged out decliners by a slim margin on Nasdaq. The broader S&P 500 held steady at 2,550. Bitcoin tumbled $48 to $4,770.
