Ground Screws Come Of Age With Australia's Supernode BESS Project Adoption

RADIX’s innovation solution will facilitate the rollout of battery storage projects for renewable energy systems by providing a firm foundation.

NuEnergy Infrastructure (Nei) Pty Ltd has selected RADIX as its main contractor to design and supply ground screw pile foundations for one of its largest Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The move, which is significant for Australia’s renewable energy landscape, will see the firm assisting in efforts to boost Queensland’s transition to a cleaner, more sustainable power network through advanced storage systems.

According to RADIX and NuEnergy, the Supernode BESS project will transform the area’s renewable sector from the ground up. When finished, it will become one of the most extensive battery storage projects on Earth, allowing the grid to store excess energy generated by solar panels and wind turbines for use later without relying on conventional baseload suppliers.

“This solution solves one of the key obstacles to the energy transition,” says RADIX director, Callum Milne. “Adding battery storage to solar and wind installations allows these units to supply grid power on demand, without waiting for the sun to shine or wind to blow. Units store excess energy while in operation in battery cells that then regulate their release of stored power to the grid when needed, usually at night.”

BESS is becoming more critical as regions, like Queensland, invest in renewable energy solutions. Taking surplus energy during peak generation allows networks to supply clean energy steadily instead of relying on coal or gas-powered backup generators to cover shortfalls. Getting this technology right will let electricity providers offer customers more flexibility when choosing green tariffs and reduce their carbon footprint further.

At the core of this project is RADIX’s capabilities in sustainable screw pile foundation design and development. The technology, unlike conventional approaches, is low-carbon and eco-friendly, minimising soil disturbance and reducing the need for extensive material evacuation. Furthermore, piles are suitable for varied and challenging soil conditions across Australia, providing a stable foundation for heavy BESS facilities while protecting the environment.

RADIX is now enjoying a three-year exclusive partnership with NuEnergy to deliver these systems. The hope is that the technology will prevent blackouts and make homes more resilient. RADIX’s solution is scalable and works in multiple contexts across the grid, helping Australia transition to net zero electricity generation.
