Award-Winning Black Documentary Photographer Rico X. Is Producing Stunning Images Of Black Culture All Over The Globe

By: Get News
Professional pilot and photographer Rico X. has traveled the world taking documentary-style photographs of people from over 88 countries. With the tagline "The Everyday Photographer," he aims to highlight the beauty of everyday life.

As a professional pilot and a man driven by curiosity and a love for travel, Rico X. has been all over the world, taking inspiration and producing incredible imagery from people, landscapes, and even wildlife throughout the globe. What started as a hobby for him has become a passion project as his growing portfolio reflects the beauty and zest for life humanity have shown in their everyday life.

Rico X.'s childhood and beginnings as a photographer

Born to Caribbean parents in London, Rico X. knew what he wanted to do from a very young age. He was famous in his family for asking "why" to everything he was told, and he was only a little over two when he announced he wanted to be a pilot. At 18, he began pilot training, and by 33, he became one of the world's youngest Boeing B777/B787 Captains.

Through his pilot work, he began seeing more and more countries and quickly decided he wanted to visit every country. Having visited 88 countries, he's well on his way to achieving that goal.

This first passion quickly began to open doors for his second, growing passion for photography. For most of his life, Rico X. was fascinated with taking pictures. He was always the one on family trips or getting together with friends that had a camera out to document the fun.

In 2013, due to a love interest with a similar interest in photography, he began to pursue that hobby. He purchased a professional camera and started with aviation and landscapes. That subject matter became mixology and bars he visited worldwide, and he set up a home photography studio to take pictures of his creations.

In 2016 he took it even a step further and took on the more challenging subject matter of wildlife. He traveled to Costa Rica, Colombia, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, and more to capture subjects like gorillas, chimpanzees, golden monkeys, and orangutans. The big African five were next, succeeding in adding to this growing passion.

By this time, he updated his camera even further, and it was in 2019 that he found his latest and most well-known subject matter. Countries like Cuba, Israel and Palestine, Vietnam, India, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritius, and Reunion Island became the backdrop for his documentary photography as he captured the everyday lives of the world's human population.

It's essential to Rico X. to never exploit the people he takes pictures of and to always do what he can to aid them and their communities. For him, it's not about that perfect picture of political and socioeconomic issues that many try to capture. He wants to show the beauty and incredible zest for life that people have in their everyday life, and his stunning portfolio, as well as dozens of award nominations and wins, represents this.

Rico X. has numerous upcoming exhibitions, all of which can be found here
