Since 1981, Mr. Drennan has worked as a highly regarded attorney and a counselor-at-law at his private law practice, for over 40 years, with offices in Alexandria, Virginia, and Fredericksburg, Virginia. In addition to this primary role, he worked as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Baltimore from 2007 to 2013, where he taught a course in health care law and risk management, and as an adjunct faculty member at Germanna Community College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he taught a course in criminal justice, from 1995 to 2000. Mr. Drennan has tried many criminal and civil cases and handled a number of appeals over the course of his career, and his practice over the past 20 years and presently is focused on representing hundreds of victims of state-sponsored terrorism. He has also represented clients in matters arising under the Alien Tort Claims Act and the Torture Victims Protection Act.
Mr. Drennan's noteworthy achievements include practicing law before the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Columbia, and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and several Immigration Courts around the country. In addition, he has also practiced law before the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the Board of Immigration Appeals, the Supreme Court of Virginia, and the Court of Appeals of Virginia.
Mr. Drennan has notably been admitted to practice law by the District of Columbia Bar and the Virginia State Bar. He is also a member of the Alexandria Bar Association, the Bar Association of the District of Columbia, the Fredericksburg (Virginia) Area Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the American Association of Justice, the Federal Bar Association, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
Mr. Drennan also serves on the Board of Visitors at his law school alma mater, The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law, in Washington, D.C., where he has endowed a scholarship in his parents' memory. As he attributes his success to his parents and mentors, he hopes to help others in the same way. "I've been in that role since 2018, mentoring new law students. I really enjoy doing that, and I'm doing it as a sort of giving back. I endowed a scholarship in my parents' memory at the law school. Every year, someone gets that scholarship, and the recipient writes me a nice note of gratitude about it," said Mr. Drennan.
Mr. Drennan has been featured in numerous prestigious publications such as The Guardian, Newsweek, The New York Times and The Washington Post. He is currently working on a book about the life of Ambassador J. Rives Childs, whom Mr. Drennan met as a senior in college, at The University of Richmond, while researching and writing a paper about him for a college course in American Diplomatic History. Ambassador Childs had a distinguished career of over 30 years in the American Foreign Service, and helped engender Mr. Drennan's lifelong interest in the Middle East, which has helped him immensely in his international law practice.
